Having seen an advert for an iPhone, I decided to build a phone out of 3D shapes in After Effects based on my own iPhone 12. I liked how the phone came out, and decided to make a short advert of my own in a similar style.

I used the free plugin Void to allow better control over the model, with the screen being a pre-comped track matte, giving me the freedom to change the phone’s background at will. From there on out it was as simple as animating text, adding lights and using an adjustment layer to apply effects.

After visiting an aquarium in Vienna this year, the fluid motion of a palpitating jellyfish caught my eye; my mind drifting to a similar movement, that of a lava lamp.

I decided to combine the two, taking a mixed media approach. I hand-drew the jellyfish in 2D to allow it’s natural elements to flourish and contrasted it with a goop made using shapes in After Effects.

Spending time in Hungary was inspiring, and with the amount of videos we had taken, it seemed only natural to make something for us to remember our trip by.

A 2:34 video edit to ‘Luh You - Anderson Paak’, edited in Premiere Pro.

The variety of different quality footage meant that the visuals were not going to be the spectacle, so instead I focussed on crafting transitions.

I did my best to create cohesion between the clips through effects and colouring, sprinkling in assets I made in After Effects to increase the visual quality.

The ‘Malvern Live Brief’ was a module on my animation course that involved us working with a real client to produce work for their project. I was partnered with the Malvern Theatre Company to create projection displays for their model of The Malvern Hills.

The work was abstract, with the client requesting we focus on feeling and ambience created by textures. The result consisted of large projections of creatures native to the hills, using a wider aspect ratio to account for the length of the model.
